A Devotional on Psalm 72:5–10
“May they fear you while the sun endures,
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!
May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,
like showers that water the earth!
In his days may the righteous flourish,
and peace abound, till the moon is no more!
May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth!
May desert tribes bow down before him,
and his enemies lick the dust!
May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute;
may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts!”
— Psalm 72:5–10 (ESV)
Psalm 72 is a powerful prophetic psalm written by Solomon, pointing beyond his own earthly kingship toward the reign of Jesus Christ — our eternal King and righteous Savior. In this passage, we are invited to behold a kingdom unlike any other: a kingdom built not by force, but by righteousness, justice, and everlasting peace.
🌞 1️⃣ A Kingdom That Will Never Fade
“May they fear You while the sun endures… as long as the moon… throughout all generations.”
This verse speaks of eternal fear of the Lord — holy reverence that lasts longer than the sun and moon themselves.
Earthly kingdoms rise and fall.
Leaders come and go.
But Christ’s kingdom has no end.
Our worship isn’t seasonal.
Our devotion isn’t momentary.
Our King reigns forever.
When we honor God daily — in work, in family, in our decisions — we reflect this eternal loyalty Scripture describes.
🌧 2️⃣ He Brings Refreshing Life to Our Souls
“May He be like rain that falls on the mown grass…”
Freshly cut grass cannot grow back without water.
And the human heart cannot flourish without God’s presence.
Jesus doesn’t merely rule —
He revives.
When we feel spiritually dry…
When worry cuts us down…
When we’re exhausted by life…
God pours out grace like rain.
He restores what was lost, strengthens what was weak, and brings new life to what felt dead.
🕊 3️⃣ A Kingdom Where Peace Flourishes
“In His days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound…”
The peace Jesus offers is not fragile or temporary.
It is not dependent on circumstances.
It is rooted in His righteousness.
Where Jesus reigns:
✔ Anxiety loses its grip
✔ Justice is restored
✔ Hope replaces fear
✔ Love conquers hate
Peace is not a dream — it is a promise.
🌍 4️⃣ A King With Global Dominion
“May He have dominion from sea to sea…”
This prophecy reaches beyond Solomon.
No worldly king has ever ruled “to the ends of the earth.”
Only Jesus, the King of Kings, fulfills this promise.
Even today…
Every nation where the Gospel spreads
Every heart surrendered to Christ
Every life transformed by grace
…shows that His rule is expanding.
And one day?
Every knee will bow
Every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10–11)
👑 5️⃣ All Nations Will Worship Him
“May the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts…”
This foreshadows the Magi who brought gifts to Jesus (Matthew 2).
It also points to the future, when every culture, every language, every people will declare His majesty.
The world does not define His worth —
He does.
And the world will one day recognize it fully.
💬 Reflection Questions
Ask yourself today:
• Do I live with daily reverence for my eternal King?
• Where do I need the “rain” of His presence?
• Am I receiving His peace or trying to control life alone?
• What areas of my heart still resist His reign?
• How can I honor Jesus as King today?
Take a moment and let these verses move your spirit into worship.
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving us a King whose reign brings peace, justice, and life. Jesus, reign in every area of my heart today. Let Your presence refresh me like rain on dry ground. Help me live with reverence that lasts as long as the sun and moon. May Your kingdom expand in my life, in my home, and across the whole earth. I bow before You, my eternal King. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ✨
